Portishead multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Adrian Utley is one of the five special ambassadors who has signed-up for IVW 18. We'll have news of the events he is curating soon, but in the meantime he's answers a few of our questions...
How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it?
What was the first venue you played as a musician?
"My college - I was terrified and I'm not sure it went too well. My girlfriend chucked me too..."
What's the most extravagant thing you’ve asked for on a rider?
"Helicopter – and no, I didn't get one."
What one quality, in your opinion, makes a great live venue?
"There are many things but a good sound is fairly important."
What are you working on next?
"Guitar quartet composition..."
What's been the best gig you've played so far?
There are loads, but playing with Patti Smith at the Royal Festival Hall was a good one. Or Latitude a couple of years ago with Portishead, Thom Yorke sang with us too."
What is your resolution for 2018?
"To write more music and continue to find new things to be inspired by and study."
It's our fifth birthday, what was the best present you got in your fifth birthday?
"My toy monkey that I still have – he looks thoroughly vile now."
